BESIX Group will build three major pedestrian bridges in the heart of Dubai. Crossing major thoroughfares of the city, the new infrastructure will dramatically improve pedestrians’ safety.

The contract was awarded to Six Construct, a BESIX entity in the Middle East, by the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority [RTA Dubai]. Improving traffic flow and pedestrian’s safety is a priority for the RTA Dubai, in accordance with the directives set by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of the Emirate of Dubai.

The bridges will be located on the King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street in the Marina area, the Khalid Bin Al Waleed Street near the intersection with the Al Rifa'a Street and the Arabian Ranches Street beside the intersection with the Al Asayel Street. The locations were selected by the RTA Dubai on the basis of objective criteria such as the number of accidents, the traffic intensity and the distance to the nearest pedestrian crossings.

The new infrastructure will combine an elegant design with high pedestrian flow. H.E. Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the RTA, explained how the design of the bridge is inspired by the urban nature of the area. The curved shape of the bridge will provide coherence and harmony with the surrounding buildings.

In this spirit, the bridge at the King Salman Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud Street, connecting the four sides of a major crossroad, will have a length of 65 meters and a capacity of 4,000 people per hour. Its iconic shape and color have been inspired by and designed to blend into the surrounding neighbourhood. The crossroad, currently crossed by 2,000 vehicles and over 2,000 pedestrians during peak hours as well as by a tramway line, is a well-known hotspot of Dubai.

Olivier Crasson, General Manager of BESIX Contracting Middle East: “We are proud to participate in a project that will improve mobility and safety in Dubai. Works will be carried out in such a way that traffic will be disrupted as little as possible, specifically during peak hours. We attach great attention to traffic flow and safety and have planned our working methods accordingly.”

Works will be completed in December 2019.
