BESIX continues to shape the Rotterdam skyline

19 May 2017

After the Montevideo (158m), New Orleans (152 m) and Maas (165 m) towers, BESIX Nederland continues to shape the Rotterdam skyline. Last Tuesday, May 16, BESIX signed the Engineer & Build-contract for the ‘Terraced Tower’, a 100 m-high residential tower alongside the river Maas. The tower will be built for real estate developer Provast and client First Sponsor (via FSMC Group in Singapore). The tower’s design is by OZ Architects.

The Terrace Tower will rise up on the site of the former offices of insurance company ‘Erasmus Verzekeringen’, situated at de Boompjes 55-58. It will house different types of urban apartments, of which 258 rental and 86 purchase units. The tower derives its name from the unit-wide terraces, which will boast a spectacular view of the city and the river Maas. Underground, the building will have a parking garage of 2 floors with a bicycle shed for 688 bikes. The ground floor will have commercial spaces and restaurant facilities, including a restaurant with a view on the river.

A complex residential building

The demolition of the old office building will start mid-July. In the meantime, the BESIX in-house engineering team and its advisors will transform the design into a realization plan. The tower requires a complex cofferdam and complicated foundations and will be built partly into the dike body. Construction works should start at the beginning of 2018 and should be finished mid-2020. The project has an investment value of approximately €100 million.

Opportunities in Rotterdam

Jeroen Philtjens, Director of BESIX Nederland: “We are proud to further contribute to the skyline of Rotterdam – a city renowned for its pioneering architecture – with this remarkable building. At the moment, there are quite a few ongoing high-rise initiatives in Rotterdam, to which BESIX can bring added value as high-rise specialist.”

Growth of urban projects

With this project, BESIX Nederland is expanding its building activities in the Netherlands. Other ongoing projects are ‘Sluishuis’, a striking building with 360 apartments designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) from Copenhagen and Barcode Architects from Rotterdam, and the new building for the ‘Hogeschool Utrecht’.
